I have been meaning to write this post since March this year, when we were in Nesso. We have been eating at the Tre Rose for ages. It’s is a simple clean hotel with beautiful views, and a lovely restaurant which also has a terrace on the other side of the road overlooking the lake.

The Tre Rose

The whole place is run by the fantastic Antoinetta; here’s a picture of her from a few years ago

Antoinetta

One of our guests at Casa del Nibbio Bruno this year , described her as ‘a gem’ She doesn’t speak English, but it really doesn’t matter at all!

In March we were there on the weekend of Festa della Donna (we saw lots of traditional Mimosa flowers and also Mimosa cakes for sale) which meant it was a busy Saturday evening in Tre Rose. We had a drink before dinner at the cafe just opposite (which is also where you buy bus tickets) and just as we got to the restaurant it started to get busy with lots of locals.
There were groups of friends dining and various teenagers popping in and out, chatting at the bar, and saying Hi to Mum & Dad who were there eating. The atmosphere was lovely and as always the food was great; you can choose from pizza, or have the more formal Antipasti, Primo, Secondo etc.
Again another guest comment from this year was
“The restaurant that you recommended ‘Tre Rose’ was really good as the food was amazing and we had a lovely meal there”

Of course in addition to the lovely Antoinetta, the other star of the Tre Rose is Carlotta…and here she is….

Finally they have free wifi, which is always useful.

If you are staying with us at Casa del Nibbio Bruno</ins> we’re always happy to book your table at the Tre Rose for you.

Just a wee selection from some of our guests in Casa del Nibbio Bruno this year.

Jocelyn, her husband and 2 children (age 15 & 12) stayed in April and this is some of what she said….

“We had a very relaxing and enjoyable break at this pristine apartment; was very comfortable and of a standard that we always hope for but seldom find. The owner Rob was a pleasure to deal with and we all hope to return. The main room of the apartment is even larger than it looks in the photos, very stylishly furnished, with spectacular views over the lake. As a family that enjoys cooking we found the kitchen to be well equipped.”

Celeste and her friends visited in May….

“We had a very relaxing and a wonderful time staying at this lovely apartment. The apartment is well equipped with all the modern facilities that one can find in any home in the city. The apartment is just as described by the owner. It is just right by the lakeside as you can see from one of the photos on the website and it is spacious too. The view from the apartment is just breathtaking and it is the kind of scenery where one normally finds on the postcard.
Nesso is a really nice and quiet place. The local peoples are very friendly and although none of us speak Italian, the owner from Café Cascata (she does not speak English) was really nice and helpful regarding the timetable of the bus and ferry. On our last night in Nesso, we had a lovely meal at the local restaurant (Tré Rose) recommended by Rob the owner of the apartment. I would like to say that the restaurant serves amazing seafood and pizzas and we were not disappointed. Rob the owner has been a wonderful host to us, always keeping check on us to see that everything is working fine. He was a pleasure to deal with and was very helpful with all the questions that I have for him. We would recommend the apartment to our friends and we hope to be back some time soon. “

Brigitte from Australia came in June with her husband and sisters…

“When we finally opened to door to the apartment and went inside I can only liken the experience to a child opening the world’s most exciting present at Christmas time. The views from all windows in the living rooms are unrivalled anywhere on the lake – small wonder George Clooney picked Lake Como as a getaway place!
We sat outside every afternoon in the garden (Australians love to be outside!) and had wine, cheese and picked cherries off the tree while watching all kinds of activity on the lake and getting to know our very friendly neighbours below.
The view at night from the apartment is like fairyland with lights from distant villages actually twinkling – mesmerising”
It is my dream to return!”

The view from our private garden

Mary and her husband & her 10 year old son from England stayed at the beginning of June

“We couldn’t have picked a better week!! The weather was perfect, and the location sublime – the views from the living room windows were to die for. The apartment was extremely well equipped and very comfortable. Lots of added touches, like the binoculars, great selection of DVDs and wifi were really appreciated.
A trip to the Jungle Raider Park (in the hills near Bellagio) was exhilarating and fun – our 10 yr old thought the zip wires were fantastic!
The apartment owner was always contactable, and very helpful answering any of our questions.
We certainly hope to return as we had such a lovely time.”

We’re just glad that everyone had such a good time.

We keep a selection of DVDs in the apartment, if you fancy a quiet night in, and quite a few of them are films with Lake Como locations.
Here’s a list of the current ones, with some info about the Lake Como connections.

James Bond: Casino Royale (12) Two locations in this one. First is Villa Balbianello, which is where Bond recuperates after his torture by La Chiffre. (you can get there from Nesso by taking the ferry to Lenno)The other is the last scene of the movie, where Bond shoots Mr White, and takes place in front of Villa La Gaeta which is up in San Siro, nearer the top of the Lake.

James Bond: Quantum of Solace (12)The film continues immediately after the events of Casino Royale with Bond
driving from Lake Como to Siena, Italy with the captured Mr. White

Ocean’s 12 (PG)Villa Erba in Cernobio was the location for Francois Toulour’s estate….and very handy for George Clooney’s place in Laglio!

Star Wars; Attack of the Clones (PG) Villa Balbianello was used for Anakin and Padmé’s wedding.

A Month on the Lake (Ein Sommer am See) (PG) And it was Villa Balbianello for this lovely film starring Vanessa Redgrave, Edward Fox and Uma Thurman.

The Other Man (15) more scenes shot on Lake Como

We also have some Italian films:

Il Postino (U)
Mediterraneo (15)
Life Is Beautiful (PG)
Malena (15)

And the rest are a mixed selection!

Austin Powers; The Spy Who Shagged Me (12)
About A Boy (12)
March of the Penguins (U)
Pride & Prejudice (U)
Breakfast at Tiffanys (PG)
The Italian (Job PG)
Really Bend it Like Beckham (U)

We hope that you enjoy them, and will let us know if there are any more, with Lake Como connections that we don’t yet have.

If you are ever in Como with your laptop and looking to get online there are very few places at the moment that do it, but I found two places I can recommend.

The best (for me anyway) is the tiny cafe ‘Seven Stars’ cafe at Via Garibaldi 42. If you’ve just arrived and are walking from the main railway station (Como, San Giovanni) towards the centre of town it’s on the left just across the traffic lights from that sculpture of two huge hands. You’ll see them don’t worry! The place has been run since the beginning of 2010 by a charming guy named Simone. He decided to see if offering free wi-fi would help business. I hope he keeps doing it, as few other places are. The place is tiny, but it’s in a convenient location and has plenty of power sockets. A tucked away and quiet little spot to settle in with a coffee or an aperetivo and catch up on some emails.

The only other place I could find was Bar Touring on Piazza Cavour (which is the main square down by the ferry ticket office). It’s a bit of a larger and more trendy place (in the Italian sense of the word!) and many of the young staff in there speak English. An even more convenient location, but they have few power sockets. Also it seems a bit like a place to ’see and be seen’, so I felt a bit conspicuous sitting there with my laptop… or maybe I just felt a bit old! Either way I guess it’s nice, if you are in the mood, that you also get the chance to watch the world walking by as you check your emails.

That’s about all I could find in Como town centre. Please drop us a comment if you find somewhere else and we’ll check it out next time we’re in town.

So, as you can hopefully see from the picture, the exhibition runs from the 27th March to the 25th of July 2010.

The weather was cold but sunny, while we were there and the lake and mountains still looked stunning. Como is a great town to wander round, with many lovely individual shops. I’m aiming to post some photos that I took while we were there.

Casa del Nibbbio Bruno is all ready for the coming season, with new furniture and a BBQ for our private garden; we hope you enjoy it all as much as we do.

It seems the lake is becoming linked to football and footballers, and you’d almost think that ‘a pad on Lake Como’ is becoming the standard part of the contract at the Milan clubs. However, the somewhat disturbing news for the Inter boss is that police have just foiled an attempt to kidnap or rob him at his Como villa.

On a more positive note, the village of Nesso is a very safe place to stay, and tucked away in our apartment you can hide from the cares of the world.

With Manchester United’s Champions League trip to Milan looming on the 16th of February, and Chelsea’s the week after on the 24th, it seems a good time to mention the stadium tour and museum at the famous San Siro stadium. The museum is the only one housed inside a stadium in Italy and it’s open every day from 1000 until 1700 (with some variations on match days) The museum is full of AC Milan and Inter Milan memorabilia and you can visit it and also do the Stadium tour, or just check out the museum. The entrance is by Gate 14 and this is the stadium website sansirotour.com

Ah...there he is.....

If you are staying in Nesso at Casa del Nibbio Bruno you can drive into Milan, or get the bus or ferry to Como, and hop on the train into Milan. If you take the train from Como Nord, which is right by the bus stop, and a very short walk from the ferry, it will take you to Milano Cardorna, take about an hour but conly cost €3.60 return. A slightly further walk is Como San Giovanni, where you can get the train to Milano Centrale, it takes 34 minutes, but costs €10.50 return. This map of Como town centre shows you the stations etc.

But when you’ve finished in the big city, you can head back to the peace of Lake Como…..
